There are many pretty rugs and carpets on the market today. Rugs are manyfold easier to produce with new technologies than they have been for most of human history. Producing a rug in the ancient ways, like we do at Suf, can take months and many pairs of hands dyeing, cutting, and knotting snippets of wool--not to mention all of the coordination that takes places as multiple people compose the rug together. Modern rugs can literally be put together in minutes by rapid pace machines in styles that resemble the ancient patterns and motifs that used to take months to finalize.

But modern rugs are wolves in sheep clothing. Why? Because although they appear beautiful, they are actually composed of synthetic materials that prove toxic to the body. According to the Environmental Working Group, "Carpets are often made with synthetic materials that can cause respiratory symptoms, eye irritation and hormone disruption."

Disturbingly, the chemicals in many synthetic rugs and carpets can react with each other to produce formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen. So as pretty as some synthetic carpets may be, it just isn't worth it to bring that toxicity into your home. Shop natural fiber wool rugs on our website.
